From Rust to Riding the Dust

Bike Repair

This bike was one fun challenge. Unfortunately, this Diamondback was left rotting in the sun for 2+ years. There was rust on almost every surface, several bearings were seized and the frame had about a half gallon of water in the down tube.

I started with a good deep cleaning and disassembly. I removed everything even down to the bearings. The down tube and rims were both full of water that poured everywhere during disassembly. The rust had infected the chain and cassette, the bearing, the bars, and a few other nooks and crannies.

At first, I did not remove the rear triangle but I went to articulate it without the rear can and it barely moved. I took off the triangle and discovered several pivot bearings completely seized. Then began the hunt for replacements.

Another bad spot of rust was the headset bearing. I ended up giving the bearing a good soak in the ultrasonic cleaner and they ran like new. In fact, I placed several parts in the ultrasonic cleaner. The rear derailleur and Cassete both took a dip coming out looking almost new!

It was now time for the best part, putting it back together again! Taking a box of parts and ending up with a great bike is such a rewarding experience. It received new and upgraded hydraulic brakes, new bearings, new handlebars, and a plethora of other parts.

This bike I once thought was trash is now a beautiful bike for someone to ride. I hope they love it and enjoy the freedom that 2 wheels on dirt gives you!

-Keep on riding
